Do I actually need a CRM, or is that overkill for a new business?

You don’t necessarily need a CRM on day one. A simple spreadsheet can work when you only have a few leads and customers.
A CRM becomes useful when follow-ups start slipping, you’re managing several conversations at once, or you need a better record of who contacted you, what they need, and what happens next.
Start simple, then upgrade when your current system isn’t enough. Some CRMs let you start for free.
