Ali G lands on Prime Video after one weekend in cinemas

Ali G: Who Iz I? has moved to Prime Video only five days after its cinema opening.

Prime Video’s listing identifies Ali G: Who Iz I? as a 2026 Amazon MGM Studios comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes. Sacha Baron Cohen directs and stars, with Morgana Robinson co-starring.

Amazon’s own October Prime Video schedule placed the title among the service’s Oct. 28 additions in the United States. For Canadian availability, JustWatch listed the film as streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Prime Video with Ads as of Oct. 31. Streaming catalogues can vary by market and account type, so the local Prime Video app remains the safest place to confirm access.

The film follows Ali G after he learns that Julie is eight months pregnant and heads to America to regain attention before facing threats to himself and his child, according to Amazon’s synopsis.

Ali G: Who Iz I? brings back one of Baron Cohen’s best-known characters more than two decades after Ali G Indahouse. It also marks Baron Cohen’s feature directorial debut, according to Amazon’s release materials and BroadwayWorld’s premiere coverage.

The cinema window was extremely short

Before release, BroadwayWorld reported the movie was set for Oct. 23 in cinemas for one weekend only. TheWrap later reported that it opened in a handful of cinemas over the weekend and was set to stream on Prime Video on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The theatrical run later continued at select locations. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Oct. 28 that screenings were extended in the Los Angeles area, New York City and the Chicago suburbs as the film began streaming.

There is some disagreement in the public reporting about how to read the short release pattern. TechRadar reported that Amazon MGM Studios said the one-weekend cinema run was always the plan before a worldwide streaming rollout. TheWrap reported that Amazon MGM had originally planned a wider theatrical release and reduced the theatrical deal after backlash to the character.

Amazon MGM has not disclosed a box-office total. PPC Land reported that Amazon’s short press release did not include box-office figures.

Why the release strategy stands out

For cinemas, a one-weekend window gives little time for repeat viewing, word of mouth or local discovery. For Amazon, the economics are different. A short cinema stop can still create press coverage, reviews and social attention before the title moves into Prime Video’s catalogue almost immediately.

That catalogue now sits inside an advertising business as well as a subscription service. Amazon Ads says Prime Video has 315 million-plus monthly ad-supported reach worldwide, based on Amazon internal data with locale-specific time frames, and lists Canada among the markets where Prime Video ads are available. Amazon’s Prime Video help page also says Prime Video movies and TV shows include limited advertisements.

That context does not prove Ali G: Who Iz I? was moved for advertising reasons. It does show why streaming availability has business value beyond viewer convenience. Every quick move from theatrical to Prime Video gives Amazon more content to keep audiences inside its own platform, where subscription viewing and ad-supported viewing are both part of the business.

No broader release rule should be assumed from one film. Still, Ali G: Who Iz I? is a useful case study in how fast the distance between cinemas and streaming can collapse when the studio and the platform have the same corporate owner.
