Steven Soderbergh steps in for the final weeks of The Batman Part II

Steven Soderbergh is joining The Batman Part II for the final stretch of principal photography, while Matt Reeves remains the film’s writer-director.

Deadline first reported the arrangement on Oct. 15. Variety and TheWrap later published the studio’s statement, which says Soderbergh approached Reeves and will help complete the final weeks of filming while Reeves attends to an ongoing family matter. The studio said the move has DC Studios’ support and that Reeves and Soderbergh will work with the actors and crew to fulfill Reeves’ vision.

The assignment is narrower than a handoff

The available reporting presents Soderbergh’s role as a finishing assist, not a creative takeover. Soderbergh said the goal is to work with Reeves and his team to generate footage that integrates with what has already been shot so Reeves can finish the film. TheWrap notes that Soderbergh has previously shot second-unit material on films including The Hunger Games and Magic Mike XXL.

The final weeks of principal photography can still affect continuity, performances and tone, but the public statements keep authorship with Reeves. Deadline reported that Reeves is expected to take over post-production duties when he is ready to return.

Reeves says he is not leaving

Reeves addressed the speculation directly on X, writing that he is “not leaving The Batman Part II” and thanking Soderbergh for helping him finish principal photography. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn echoed that message on Threads, according to the Los Angeles Times, saying Reeves is still the director and “always will be.”

The pause came earlier in October

Variety reported on Oct. 6 that Warner Bros. and DC Studios had temporarily paused production while Reeves focused on a family matter. The studio said then that Reeves had its full support and that it looked forward to continuing the project soon.

Robert Pattinson later told Official Pop Drop at the London Film Festival that the film was “pausing for a little bit” and that the team would “figure it all out,” according to Variety.

The release date has not changed in the new reports

The Batman Part II is still listed for Feb. 18, 2028 in recent reports from TheWrap and the Los Angeles Times. Variety has noted that the sequel has already moved more than once, so any production pause naturally raises scheduling questions. The Soderbergh update, however, did not come with a newly reported release-date shift.
