James Gunn has given the DCU’s Batman search a new status update: casting is getting closer, but the role has not been filled.
In The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast, from DC Studios Showcase, Gunn said it “won’t be too long” before DC Studios casts Batman and that the eventual casting “isn’t very far away,” according to Variety and the Los Angeles Times. He also pushed back on rumors that the actor is already chosen, saying Batman “isn’t cast yet.”
DC has not announced a shortlist, a deal or an actor. The Los Angeles Times also reported that Gunn wrote on Threads, “No one is in the running.”
Gunn’s comments were unusually direct for a role surrounded by rumor. He said people expecting the character to appear in unnamed projects based on an already completed casting decision were wrong. The phrasing leaves room for a future appearance, but not for a current hidden casting announcement.
For readers tracking DC’s film slate, the practical takeaway is straightforward: the next reliable Batman update should come from DC Studios, Gunn, or a trade report tied to an actual hire, not from fancast momentum or cameo speculation.
Gunn is emphasizing fit over celebrity
Gunn also described how he is thinking about the search. Variety reported that he is excited by the chance to choose “the best actor for that role,” and he contrasted that with Batman’s screen history, where the part has often gone to movie stars.
That does not rule out a famous performer. It does suggest the studio is not treating name recognition as the main selling point. Since Steve Agee’s question on the podcast framed the role as one an actor may be playing for years, the discussion points toward durability rather than a one-film stunt cast.
Age is a clearer filter, but not a number
Asked whether age has to be part of the casting decision, Gunn answered “definitely,” according to Variety. He said Batman and Superman are “around the same age” and described them as “future best pals” and “contemporaries.”
That is narrower than a completely open search, but it is not a birth-year requirement. Gunn did not say Batman must be the same age as David Corenswet or give a specific range. The safer read is that DC is avoiding a version of Bruce Wayne who feels a generation apart from its Superman.
Where this leaves The Brave and the Bold
The casting update points back to The Brave and the Bold, the Batman film DC Studios announced in 2023. Warner Bros. Discovery’s original slate announcement described the movie as the project that would introduce the DCU’s Batman and Robin in an “unusual father-son story” inspired by Grant Morrison’s comics.
Gunn’s latest remarks do not add a release date, confirm a director change, or identify which project will first show the DCU Batman on screen. Variety described The Brave and the Bold as a Batman project separate from Robert Pattinson’s hero in Matt Reeves’ series.
