Keanu Reeves is reportedly set to star in Maelstrom, a Netflix action thriller that has moved back into development more than three decades after it was first sold as a spec script.
Page Six Hollywood first reported Reeves’ attachment, with TheWrap and Variety also reporting the casting move. Reeves would take over from Reacher star Alan Ritchson, who had been attached to the project before exiting for undisclosed reasons.
A 1990s action pitch gets a streaming-era revival
Maelstrom is built around a Federal Marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer as she seeks witness protection before testifying against him. The reported setup turns into a contained siege when a hurricane cuts off outside communication and reinforcements, leaving the marshal and witness to face both the storm and the arms dealer’s men.
The project dates back to 1993, when Gregory Fitzpatrick’s script was sold to Warner Bros. TheWrap noted that early trade coverage framed the project as “Die Hard” during a hurricane, a high-concept action package originally tied to the 1990s spec-script market.
Jeff Robinov, who was involved in the original sale while at ICM and later became Warner Bros. film chief, is producing the revived version. Mark Bianculli has reportedly revised the screenplay.
The Netflix angle
The choice of director is part of the draw. Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed Netflix’s Carry-On, is attached to direct Maelstrom. As of November 1, 2026, Netflix’s own all-time English-language film chart lists Carry-On at No. 3 with 172.1 million views in its first 91 days, giving the streamer a clear reason to keep betting on compact, high-concept action thrillers.
That does not guarantee a repeat. The useful read is narrower: Maelstrom gives Netflix a recognizable star, a proven action-thriller director and a premise that can be explained in one sentence. For a streaming film, that combination counts because the title has to survive a crowded homepage before anyone reaches the trailer.
What is still unconfirmed
No confirmed filming start, supporting cast, trailer or release date has been announced in the reporting reviewed.
Reeves’ reported casting does not mean Maelstrom is close to release. The next meaningful update will be a production start date, additional casting or a formal Netflix announcement.
