Shopify opens Shop MCP so AI agents can search, cart and check out

Shopify has opened a new route for third-party AI shopping agents to search Shopify Catalog, create carts and move shoppers toward checkout through Shop Pay.

In an October 13 developer changelog, Shopify said Shop MCP works with more than 1 billion products in Shopify Catalog. Product search does not require an API key.

Shop MCP is a hosted MCP server for agents and apps. MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is the connection layer that compatible agents use to reach outside tools and services.

The connection exposes 17 tools, according to Shop.dev’s tool reference. They cover catalog search, product lookup (including options and prices), cart creation, checkout creation, checkout completion, Shop account details, order search and spend-request flows for purchases outside Shopify.

Search, carts and checkout can work without a Shop account, though unsigned shoppers may still be sent to a merchant checkout page. A signed-in Shop shopper can give the agent access to saved preferences, addresses and Shop Pay. In the standard checkout flow, the agent completes the purchase after the shopper confirms the total and payment method.

A checkout belongs to one merchant, so items from multiple stores require separate checkouts. Orders placed through an agent appear in Shopify admin like other orders. At launch, Shopify says there are no webhooks for this flow, so developers need to poll get_checkout to track checkout status.

How this differs from earlier Shopify AI commerce moves

Shopify has been building toward this through several releases. In January, it announced Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Google, and said Shopify Catalog was opening to brands that do not use Shopify through the Agentic plan. In June, Shopify said developers could build on UCP and Catalog API without applying for approval.

Shop MCP narrows the distance between product discovery and checkout. Earlier Catalog API access gave builders a way to search product data. Shop MCP adds a shopper-side path that can use the Shop account, saved addresses and Shop Pay once the shopper signs in.

Why merchants should care

The release is a distribution change more than a storefront redesign. A compatible agent can search products and prepare checkout before a shopper lands on a store page, which puts more pressure on catalog data.

Product titles, descriptions, images, variants, availability, prices and policies become inputs for agents. If those inputs are thin or inconsistent, an agent has less reliable material for matching a request to the right product.

Shopify’s Global Catalog documentation shows how detailed this can get. Product discovery can use text, images or known product IDs, and results can be filtered by availability, shipping destination, price, product condition, shop, category, color, size and rating.

There is also a caveat. Shopify says some Global Catalog response fields are generated or enriched by Shopify and should be treated as discovery and merchandising signals, not merchant-authored source text. For merchants, that makes source product data and policy accuracy even more important.

Consumers still have approval and data-sharing steps

By default, shoppers review and approve each purchase. Shop also offers an optional “Allow agent to pay for me” setting for personal agents, permitting purchases within a shopper-set spending budget without approving each order. Shoppers can manage or revoke connections and purchase permissions in Shop settings.

Shop also warns that agents and platforms can make mistakes or display inaccurate product, price, tax, shipping, availability or return information. Its guidance tells shoppers to review purchase details carefully before approving payment and to connect only through Shop’s authorization screen.

When a shopper connects Shop, the data shown at connection may include profile details, limited payment method details, purchase approval details, order information and personalized search results. After information is shared with a third-party agent or platform, that third party’s terms, privacy policy, settings and the shopper’s instructions govern its use.

What this says about ecommerce discovery

Shopify is making a bet that product discovery will happen across AI interfaces, not only through store search, marketplaces or search engines. The release fits a broader pattern Tech Help Canada has covered in AI-driven search and discovery: answers, comparisons and summaries are becoming front doors to websites, products and services.

For ecommerce operators, the useful test is whether an agent can understand the product well enough to recommend it and whether the checkout path can complete without breaking shopper trust. That is a product data, policy, analytics and operations problem, not only a developer integration.

Shop MCP does not settle how agentic shopping will play out. It does show that Shopify wants its catalog and Shop Pay to become infrastructure for the agents that shoppers use next.
