ElevenLabs SFX v3 targets more reliable multi-sound audio prompts

ElevenLabs announced SFX v3, a new version of its text-to-sound-effects model, for ElevenCreative and ElevenAPI on October 29, 2026.

According to ElevenLabs, SFX v3 follows prompts with multiple sounds more reliably than SFX v2. For a short sports clip, for example, ElevenLabs points to a crowd cheering, a ball dropping and the same crowd booing as one prompt sequence the new model is meant to handle better.

The model also improves prompts that combine environmental effects with music or vocals. ElevenLabs says benchmark testing showed more natural audio than SFX v2 and fewer unwanted artifacts on high-frequency sounds such as gongs, chimes and whistles.

On the product side, ElevenLabs says SFX v3 is available through ElevenCreative, including the Sound Effects tab, Flows, Studio and the Music Editor, as well as through ElevenAPI and the company’s mobile app.

ElevenLabs introduced Text to Sound Effects on May 31, 2024, saying the tool could generate sound effects, short instrumental tracks, soundscapes and character voices from text prompts.

The API release is not automatic

Developers using the Sound Effects API need to request the new model explicitly. ElevenLabs’ November 2 developer post says SFX v3 uses the existing POST /v1/sound-generation endpoint, with model_id set to eleven_text_to_sound_v3.

That detail affects existing integrations because the API reference still lists eleven_text_to_sound_v2 as the default model and lists both v2 and v3 as allowed values. The models documentation also states that v2 is deprecated and scheduled for removal on March 1, 2027.

Looping is another item to test. The November 2 developer post says looping currently only works with v2, while the API reference lists loop as a sound-generation parameter and the models page says SFX v3 supports looping. Teams that rely on seamless loops should verify behaviour in their own account before migrating those requests.

ElevenLabs recommends comparing both models before switching. Teams using the API should focus on frequent prompts, inspect duration and output-format settings, and document any v2-specific behaviour.

Prompt order now carries more weight

ElevenLabs says order matters for multi-part sound effects. The developer guidance recommends listing events in the sequence they should happen. A prompt such as footsteps on gravel, then a metallic door opens is closer to the new model’s intended use than a loose pile of sound labels.

For single effects, shorter concrete prompts remain the recommended approach. ElevenLabs also says wording can change output; in one tester’s example, a couple arguing in French worked better than a couple fighting in French.

The docs set a boundary around control, too. Exact repetition counts, such as asking for a triangle to be hit four times, are not always followed. That keeps SFX v3 in the category of generative audio, not deterministic audio programming.

Where it may fit

For creators, the release is most useful for short sound scenes rather than one-off effects. Likely use cases include short-form video, game prototypes, ads and rough cuts where a producer needs original audio quickly before final editing.

It may reduce manual layering in early drafts, though finished work will still need editing, timing, licensing checks and human review. ElevenLabs’ own guidance says results vary by prompt, so the upgrade is not a guarantee that every prompt will produce a production-ready result on the first try.
