A cyber incident just moved into Boston Scientific’s earnings outlook

The medical device maker says an August cybersecurity incident disrupted manufacturing, order processing and shipments, and is now expected to affect third-quarter and full-year 2026 results.

A cyberattack does not need to begin with a confirmed data breach to hurt the business. Sometimes the bigger immediate hit is downtime.

Boston Scientific gave investors a fresh example on September 8, 2026. In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that morning, the company said an August 25 cybersecurity incident involved unauthorized activity on certain systems and caused a network outage.

That outage limited access to operating systems and business applications used to manufacture products and process and ship customer orders. Boston Scientific said the incident is likely to have a material impact on its third-quarter and full-year 2026 results, and that it is unlikely to meet the net sales growth and adjusted EPS guidance it issued on July 29.

The company has not said who was behind the incident. It also said that, as of the September filing, it had not identified evidence of ongoing unauthorized access to its systems.

For business leaders, the message is not subtle. Cyber risk can become production risk, supply-chain risk, customer risk and earnings risk in the same quarter.

Many companies underestimate the messy period after restoration begins. Restoring systems is not the same as restoring the quarter. Delayed production can create backlogs. Backlogs can delay revenue. Workarounds can raise costs. Some demand may be recovered later, but not every lost week can be put back neatly.

The guidance warning came after a strong second quarter

The timing is especially painful because Boston Scientific had just reported a strong second quarter.

On July 29, the company reported $5.442 billion in net sales for the second quarter of 2026, up 7.5% on a reported basis from the prior-year period. Adjusted EPS was $0.86, above the company’s guidance range of $0.82 to $0.84.

Boston Scientific then guided for full-year 2026 net sales growth of about 5.5% to 6.5% on a reported basis and adjusted EPS of $3.28 to $3.32. For the third quarter, it guided for net sales growth of about 3% to 5% and adjusted EPS of $0.80 to $0.82.

Those targets are now unlikely to be met, according to the September filing.

The shift is a useful reminder for any business that treats cyber risk as a technical line item. A company can be growing, selling and operating normally, then have one incident reach the systems that keep orders and production moving. The financial conversation changes quickly after that.

Healthcare makes the disruption more sensitive

Boston Scientific is not selling ordinary consumer goods. It makes medical technologies used by hospitals, clinicians and patients across areas such as cardiovascular care, endoscopy, urology and neuromodulation.

Start with the systems that turn directly into revenue or customer promises. Which applications are required to accept orders? Which ones schedule work? Which ones control inventory, shipping, billing or customer communication? Which systems can run manually for a few days, and which ones cannot?

Then test the recovery assumptions. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope. A manual process nobody has practiced is not much better. A vendor escalation path buried in someone’s inbox will not help if that inbox is part of the outage.
