Google’s AI Max auto-upgrades put Search campaign settings under review

Google is automatically moving some existing Search campaigns into AI Max during September 2026, turning a platform setting that many advertisers may have treated as routine into a campaign governance issue.

The current rollout applies to Search campaigns using campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets, according to Google’s Ads & Commerce announcement and later Google Ads Developer Blog guidance. The migration window runs from September 1 to September 30, 2026. As of Friday, September 18, 2026, that window is still open.

The point for advertisers is not simply that Google is adding another AI feature. AI Max is not a separate campaign type. Google Ads Help describes it as an optimization layer inside existing Search campaigns. That structure means a campaign can remain recognizably the same in the interface while its matching, creative, and reporting behaviour moves under AI Max controls.

The September migration has a narrower scope than some earlier coverage suggested

Google originally announced in April 2026 that legacy Search features including Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, and campaign-level broad match would move toward AI Max. Google later updated the timeline in June, saying the Dynamic Search Ads sunset and auto-upgrade would begin in February 2027 instead of September 2026.

That leaves two groups in the September 2026 auto-upgrade: campaigns using campaign-level broad match and campaigns using automatically created assets, now folded into Google’s text customization language.

The Google Ads Developer Blog separated the work into two phases. Phase one covers campaign-level broad match and automatically created assets from September 1 to September 30, 2026. Phase two covers Dynamic Search Ads in February 2027. Search Engine Land’s August reporting matched that timeline and added the wider implication for advertisers and developers: older campaign structures are being phased out while AI Max becomes the main path for these Search features.

Why this is more than a label change

Google frames AI Max as a way to expand reach, tailor creative, and improve Search campaign performance with more automation. Google’s April announcement cited an average 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS when advertisers use the full AI Max feature suite compared with search term matching alone. That figure is a comparison between AI Max configurations, not a guarantee against a specific advertiser’s existing Search setup.

The campaign behaviour change sits in the features AI Max brings together.

Search term matching expands beyond existing keywords using broad match and keywordless technology, drawing from current keywords, creatives, and URLs. Text customization, formerly automatically created assets, can generate ad copy, headlines, and descriptions using existing ads, landing page copy, and generative AI. Final URL expansion can send traffic to a page Google judges more relevant to the search intent.

Not every migrated campaign receives every AI Max feature in the same way. Google’s migration mapping says campaigns using automatically created assets are upgraded with search term matching and text customization enabled by default. Campaigns using campaign-level broad match are upgraded with search term matching enabled by default.

That distinction matters. A campaign already using campaign-level broad match was already operating with broad matching behaviour. A campaign using automatically created assets may have been using automation for creative support while still depending on tighter keyword control. For that second group, the automatic migration can change the campaign’s targeting behaviour as well as its generated text output.

Campaign-level broad match carries its own priority change

Google’s broad match documentation adds another detail for advertisers that rely on account structure and keyword priority rules. The campaign-level broad match setting converts existing phrase and exact match keywords into broad match and is available only when the campaign uses conversion-based Smart Bidding.

Google’s same Help page says that when campaign-level broad match is disabled or moved to AI Max, broad keywords are not treated as exact match keywords in prioritization. Advertisers that relied on the previous prioritization effect may need to review whether exact match copies are needed in the new structure.

This is the kind of change that can be missed if the account review stops at the campaign name, status, and budget. The campaign may still look familiar, while auction eligibility and prioritization behave differently than expected.

Control moves into different places

Google’s documentation does not describe AI Max as a loss of all control. It points to brand controls, locations of interest, URL controls, text guidelines, and feature-level toggles inside AI Max. Google’s FAQ also says negative keywords are respected when AI Max is turned on.

The practical concern is that controls now live in a different framework. Search term matching can be controlled at the ad group level after the campaign-level AI Max setting is enabled. Text customization can be turned off from the asset optimization panel. Generated text assets can be reviewed and removed. Reporting now includes AI Max-specific views that connect search terms, headlines, landing pages, campaigns, and ad groups.

For accounts with strict brand, legal, product, or offer language, the creative side deserves extra attention. Google’s FAQ says AI Max can identify marketing messages from URLs, write assets that complement existing ads, and send those assets into the auction. In accounts where exact wording matters, generated copy is not a set-and-forget setting.

Reporting teams and developers have a separate cleanup job

The migration also affects teams that manage Google Ads through scripts, data warehouses, dashboards, or agency reporting systems.

Google’s Ads Developer Blog said creation of new campaign-level broad match configurations and legacy automatically created assets was blocked across the Google Ads interface, Google Ads Editor, and the API on August 3, 2026. Future Google Ads API versions released after September 1, 2026, are expected to remove the legacy entities used to create or manage those settings. Older active API versions can keep temporary support until their normal sunset period, expected around September 2027.

Google’s developer documentation also lists AI Max-specific API fields and reports, including the AI Max setting on campaigns and reporting views for search term and ad combinations. For reporting systems that still assume every Search query maps neatly to a keyword and fixed landing page, AI Max adds more source and destination detail to track.

What advertisers should review now

Because the September rollout affects existing campaigns, the safest review starts with inventory. Account teams should identify every Search campaign using campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets, then separate them into the two migration groups because their default AI Max settings differ.

After that, the review should focus on the parts most likely to affect business outcomes:

  • Search terms: compare query quality before and after migration, especially where exact and phrase match structure previously carried most of the account strategy.
  • Generated assets: review AI-generated headlines and descriptions for accuracy, offer fit, compliance, and brand tone.
  • Landing pages: check whether final URL expansion or URL controls are active, and confirm that traffic is going to pages that match the campaign’s intent.
  • Brand and location controls: confirm that exclusions, inclusions, and location-intent settings still reflect the advertiser’s market.
  • Negative keywords: verify that existing exclusions still cover the new search behaviour created by AI Max search term matching.
  • Scripts and reporting: update any internal tools that still depend on legacy campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets fields.

Google’s AI Max reporting documentation says advertisers should wait at least two weeks after enabling AI Max before making some optimization changes, such as adding negative keywords, so Google Ads has time to learn. That recommendation is about performance reading and learning periods. It does not remove the need for immediate checks on account eligibility, brand controls, text output, tracking, and governance.

The wider signal from Google Ads

The AI Max migration fits a larger pattern in Google Ads: automation is moving from optional experiment to default operating layer. Google Ads Help now says new Search campaigns have AI Max selected by default, while legacy Search features are being absorbed into the same system.

For smaller advertisers, the operational risk is unreviewed automation tied to live budget. A setting that was turned on months ago for one purpose can become the trigger for a broader AI Max migration later. That is why this story matters for marketers beyond the immediate September deadline.

Google’s argument is performance, reach, and simplified campaign management. The advertiser’s responsibility is oversight: knowing which campaigns changed, which AI Max features are active, what queries and assets are being produced, and whether spend is still aligned with the business goal behind the campaign.
