Reese Witherspoon and French production group Mediawan said on Oct. 13 that they are buying Hello Sunshine, the women-focused studio Witherspoon founded in 2016, from Candle Media.
Hello Sunshine is set to become part of Mediawan’s wider group of independent production labels. Variety reported that Hello Sunshine co-founder Seth Rodsky will join the company’s board alongside Witherspoon and representatives from Mediawan. That points to a hybrid structure: founder involvement returns to the center, while Mediawan provides the scale and international production network.
Mediawan has been adding Hollywood-connected assets to a portfolio that already includes Chernin Entertainment, Plan B Entertainment and See-Saw Films. AFP reported that Mediawan acquired Plan B at the end of 2022 and The North Road Company in early 2026.
The valuation reset is the key business issue
Axios reported, citing sources, that the new purchase price was in the low to mid eight figures. TheWrap separately reported a similar range and said Hello Sunshine had been valued at $900 million when Candle Media took its majority stake in 2021. The reported transaction price is therefore a small fraction of the earlier valuation, though the figures may not be directly comparable because the current ownership terms and full financial structure have not been disclosed.
Hello Sunshine’s 2021 deal with a Blackstone-backed venture landed during a period when streaming services, private equity firms and media companies were paying heavily for premium content pipelines and audience-driven brands. Blackstone’s 2021 announcement positioned Hello Sunshine as the first investment for a newly formed media company run by Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, with Witherspoon and then-CEO Sarah Harden continuing to oversee day-to-day operations and remain equity holders.
Hello Sunshine’s value appears to have shifted. The 2021 pitch was tied to the idea that a celebrity-led media brand could connect content, community and commerce at scale. The 2026 deal appears more focused on proven production output, a known founder, Reese’s Book Club and a pipeline of women-centered stories that can travel through film and television.
Why Mediawan wants Hello Sunshine
Hello Sunshine gives Mediawan a recognizable U.S. creative brand with credits including Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere, Daisy Jones & the Six and Where the Crawdads Sing. It also brings Reese’s Book Club, a consumer-facing reading community that can surface books before some of them become screen projects.
That combination fits Mediawan’s acquisition pattern. The company has been building a broad network of production labels while presenting itself as a home for creator-led companies that retain distinct identities. For Hello Sunshine, the promise is access to a larger pool of talent, formats, production relationships and buyers without discarding the brand Witherspoon built.
The deal also reconnects Hello Sunshine with Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs, early backers of the company through The Chernin Group. TheWrap reported that Chernin and Jacobs were involved in bringing the opportunity to Mediawan co-founder and CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton.
What the sale says about Candle Media
Candle Media’s original logic was to assemble creator-driven companies with strong audience relationships and expand them across content, commerce and experiences. That strategy has become harder to sustain as streaming companies cut spending, advertising softened and Hollywood’s 2023 labor strikes slowed production. TheWrap reported that Hello Sunshine struggled to grow the direct-to-consumer subscription revenue Candle had hoped would become a major opportunity.
The Hello Sunshine sale also follows a broader shift at Candle. Axios reported in 2025 that Candle co-CEO Kevin Mayer said the company planned to sell or seek public exits for individual brands rather than the overall company. In February 2026, Axios reported that Candle sold a majority stake in digital media company ATTN: back to its co-founders.
Seen that way, Hello Sunshine’s exit looks less like an isolated celebrity deal and more like another step away from the media roll-up model Candle was built to pursue.
What remains unknown
Several key details are still private, including the final price, the ownership split between Witherspoon and Mediawan, whether Candle retains any interest, the closing date and whether there will be leadership or staffing changes.
