Universal Pictures announced that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will return to more than 1,000 screens in the U.S. and Canada starting Friday, Dec. 11, 2026. The run will cover all formats, including IMAX and IMAX 70mm.
The rerelease follows a theatrical run that Universal says has reached US$626 million domestically, $1.175 billion internationally and $1.80 billion worldwide. The studio also said The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film in both Universal Pictures history and Christopher Nolan’s career.
Universal said the movie first opened on July 17 and held the No. 1 worldwide spot for its first two weeks. The studio listed several records for the film, including biggest IMAX film ever, biggest global R-rated film and biggest domestic IMAX 70mm opening weekend. The film continues to play internationally in all formats, according to Universal.
The film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton and John Leguizamo, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Nolan wrote and directed the adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, with Emma Thomas and Nolan producing for Syncopy.
Why the IMAX 70mm return stands out
Universal describes The Odyssey as the first film in history to be filmed entirely in IMAX. IMAX’s own July release note said every frame was shot with IMAX film cameras and promoted both IMAX and IMAX 70mm tickets for the original run.
Universal’s wording says the rerelease includes IMAX and IMAX 70mm, not that every IMAX showing will be in 70mm. Actual format availability will depend on each theatre’s schedule and projection setup. The studio did not publish a theatre-by-theatre IMAX 70mm list in the announcement, so Canadian moviegoers will need to check local exhibitors’ listings as Dec. 11 approaches.
IMAX has another reason to keep the film visible
IMAX said in its third-quarter 2026 results that The Odyssey had generated more than $550 million in worldwide IMAX box office, accounting for more than 30% of the film’s global box office. IMAX also reported a record quarterly global box office of $712 million for the period.
Those figures help explain why an IMAX 70mm rerelease is more than a victory lap. IMAX was not a niche add-on to the film’s performance. It supplied a significant share of global ticket sales and gives theatres another premium-format event before the end of the year.
