How to Install WordPress on Your Hosting Plan

Installing WordPress gives your hosting plan the website software it needs to create pages, posts, menus, forms, and other site features. The exact installation path depends on your hosting product.

Some WordPress hosting products set up WordPress for you. Other hosting plans, such as cPanel hosting, may let you install WordPress from a hosting dashboard or application installer.

Before You Install WordPress

Gather these details before starting:

  • The domain you want to use
  • The hosting product you purchased
  • Whether the domain points to the hosting plan
  • The site name
  • The admin username you want to use
  • A strong admin password
  • The admin email address
  • Whether SSL is active or planned
  • Whether you are installing a new site or replacing an old one

If the domain already has a website, email, or another WordPress installation, pause before installing. Installing WordPress in the wrong place can overwrite files or create confusion about which site is live.

Choose the Right Installation Path

If you have WordPress hosting, start in the Tech Help Canada Hosting account area and open the WordPress hosting product. The product dashboard may already include a guided setup path.

If you have cPanel hosting, open the hosting product from the Tech Help Canada Hosting portal, select the correct hosting plan, and look for WordPress or application installation tools.

If a developer is installing WordPress manually, they may use files, a database, and wp-config.php. Manual installation is usually not the best first choice for a non-technical owner unless someone experienced is handling it.

Install WordPress From Your Hosting Dashboard

The exact labels can vary, but the general flow is:

  1. Sign in to the Tech Help Canada Hosting account area.
  2. Open the hosting product that will run the site.
  3. Choose the correct domain or website.
  4. Look for the WordPress installer or application installer.
  5. Select WordPress.
  6. Enter the site title.
  7. Create the WordPress admin username and password.
  8. Add the admin email address.
  9. Choose the install location.
  10. Start the installation.

If you want WordPress at the main domain, avoid installing it into a subfolder unless that is your goal. For example, installing into /blog may make the site appear at yourbusiness.ca/blog instead of yourbusiness.ca.

Use a Strong Admin Login

Choose an admin username that is not easy to guess. Avoid using admin, your domain name, or the business name by itself.

Use a strong password and store it securely. The admin account can change the site, install plugins, manage users, and edit settings, so treat it like a business asset.

Also use an admin email address that your business can access. WordPress may send password resets, update notices, and other site messages there.

Connect the Domain

WordPress can be installed before the public domain points to the hosting plan, but visitors will not see the site at the final domain until DNS and hosting settings are connected.

After installation, check:

  • Root domain
  • www version
  • HTTPS
  • WordPress dashboard login
  • Homepage
  • Admin email address

If the domain is not showing the WordPress site, check DNS, hosting assignment, installation location, and SSL.

Check SSL

Your WordPress site should load with https://. If SSL is not active, visitors may see browser warnings.

After SSL is active, test:

If the site loads over HTTPS but still shows warnings, it may be loading some images, scripts, or styles over http://.

After Installation

Once WordPress is installed, do not start by adding a long list of plugins. First check the basic settings, theme, homepage, permalinks, users, backups, and SSL.
